Gil Scott-Heron ist tot.

Meist sprach er, selten sang er.

Er war Poet, Musiker, sprach in Rhythmen zu Jazz und Soul, und er tat es mit einer klaren, provozierenden, oft ärgerlichen Stimme. Der Bassist Ron Carter, der Scott-Heron in dem Stück "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" musikalisch begleitete, beschrieb die Anziehungskraft dieser Stimme so: "He wasn't a great singer, but with that voice, if he had whispered it would have been dynamic. It was a voice like you would have for Shakespeare."

Gil Scott-Heron hatte den scharfen Blick aufs große Ganze und teilte ihn wortgewaltig mit. Er tat es - wofür ich ihn liebte - nicht als Prediger von der Kanzel, sondern als sarkastischer Kommentator. In seinen Texten setzte er sich viel mit der desolaten Situation der Afroamerikaner und der Bürgerrechtsbewegung, aber auch zynisch mit deren Zaungästen und Maulhelden auseinander. Letzteren hat er sein wohl bekanntestes Stück gewidmet, "The Revolution Will not Be Televised".

Die erste Aufnahme ist ein Monolog ohne musikalische Begleitung. Sie stammt aus dem 1982 gedrehten Film "Gil Scott-Heron: Black Wax".

In der zweiten Aufnahme wird Scott-Herons Stimme von jazzigem, ungeduldigem Funk begleitet.

Die Texte beider Aufnahmen unterscheiden sich an manchen Stellen. Scott-Heron sprach stets frei und erweiterte oder veränderte seinen Vortrag, je nachdem, wozu ihn sein Publikum, seine Tageslaune oder die aktuelle politische Lage gerade inspirierte.
